2010 Society Officers

The officers chosen to lead the Boone County Genealogical Society in the coming year have been selected, but we cannot talk about next year's leadership without mentioning the men and women who led the society this past year. Cemetery Restoration Workshop

The Boone County, Indiana, Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project will sponsor a Gravestone Restoration Workshop on October 24th at Thorntown Old Cemetery at 400 North Pearl Street (across from the fire station). Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. Registration for the workshop is limited to 20 people. The cost is $15.00 and includes a manual and a stone resetting mortar kit. Please call to register at 765-436-7151 by Saturday, October 17th, make checks payable to Larry Truitt.

Larry Truitt, the coordinator of the Boone County, Indiana, Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project, will be conducting the workshop (see http://www.rootsweb.ancstry.com/~inpcrp/ for more information). He'll discuss various kinds of stones, why they decay or get broken, and an overview of how to repair them, followed by instruction in the most common gravestone preservation techniques. The workshop will cover safety equipment, site cleaning equipment, stone cleaning supplies, stone repairing supplies, resetting stones, mortar mixes, leveling stones, resetting bases, and using a hoist. Included is a hands-on section where participants can apply the workshop information to actual stones. Cemetery caretakers will learn effective, hands-on skills for doing simple repair and resetting of tombstones in their own cemeteries.

Truitt is the founder of the Boone County Genealogical Society, a member of the Indiana Historical Society, Association of Grave Studies, Thorntown Historical Society, and Indiana Pioneer Cemetery Restoration Project. Board of Directors Nominations

The BCGS Board of Directors nominating committee has been successful in acquiring a slate to be voted on at our September meeting at Thorntown Public Library. The nominees for the Board of Directors are: Rodger Clark (of Lebanon), Jamey Hickson (of Lebanon), Beth Kielb (of Zionsville), and Helen Shumaker (of Plainfield). Nominations from the floor will also be accepted. Be sure to come and vote at this meeting.

BCGS Meeting, Tuesday, August 25, 2009

The Boone County Genealogical Society will hold a meeting on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Sullivan Munce Cultural Center (225 West Hawthorne Street, Zionsville, Indiana). CCGS Family History Seminar

On Saturday, September 19, 2009, the Clinton County Genealogical Society will hold their Annual Family History Seminar. The seminar will be held in the Frankfort Community Public Library in Room 219 on the second floor (the library is located at 208 West Clinton Street, in Frankfort). Registration will be from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m., and the seminar will last until 3:30 p.m. For more information contact Tami Pelling at: genealogy_123@yahoo.com The two morning sessions will be held by Ron Darrah--one on Revolutionary War Records and the other on Ulster Scots. The two afternoon sessions will be held by Lloyd Hosman--one on Ohio Research and the other on Writing Your Own Family History.

4-H Fair Genealogy Project

Congratulations to all of the students who completed Boone County's 4-H Genealogy Project! Adam Rice received Grand Champion and Sidney Riegel received Reserve Grand Champion. Four of the winners also went on the State Fair; their awards are as follows: Jessica Tinkle, Red; Ray Keith Everett, Blue; Sidney Riegel, Blue; and Adam Rice, Merit.

July Meeting of the BCGS

This is just a reminder that there will not be a meeting of the Boone County Genealogical Society this month. We do this every year to avoid conflicts with the 4-H Fair. The next meeting will be on August 25th at the Sullivan-Munce Cultural Center.

Photo Preservation Workshop, July 19th

Looking for tips on how to preserve your family photos? Then come to the SullivanMunce Cultural Center in Zionsville for a special workshop with Wesley Wilson, Coordinator of Archives and Special Collections at DePauw University.
Mr. Wilson, an expert in the field, will be sharing information on the best ways to preserve and care for your family photographs. Attendees are encouraged to bring along any family photos that present a specific preservation problem.
Registration is required and space is limited. Cost: $5.00 per person and may be paid on the day of the workshop. For more information, please contact the SullivanMunce Cultural Center at 317.873.4900.
